ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A native of Lee County, Kentucky,
Carmen Dunigan was living in Fairfax with his sister Daisy Gilliam and her
family when he joined the Army. His brother, Pryse, also served in the Army. Carmen worked as a steeplejack prior to the war. He served in Company A, 491st Port Battalion and trained at Fort Sill,
Oklahoma and Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. Members of port battalions typically
worked as stevedores, loading and unloading ships. SSgt Dunigan was serving in
New Guinea when, according to his Hospital Admission Card File record, he died from a
ruptured liver following a fall from a height.

in North Africa. He was wounded in action in Italy on May 12, 1944 when he was
shot in the arm and thoracic wall. Corporal Dunigan received the Purple Heart,
American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
